The Design of Torches
Saturday
Understanding torch physics, how different designs naturally create different types of flames and how that affects the type of work that each is best for.
This session takes a practical, high-level look at torch design and subsequent torch behavior from the perspective of the working bench jeweler. Understanding how the torch design relates to torch function improves the real world experience, success, and ultimate quality of the working jeweler.
This discussion will break down flame structure, fuel chemistry, and the heat they create in clear, understandable terms that connect directly to daily bench work. Attendees will gain insight into why certain torch designs easily produce a sharp, focused heat while others deliver broader, more diffuse warmth. This will lead into discussion as to why some metals seem to jump straight to melting, and why solder sometimes flows perfectly but other times refuses to cooperate. All who attend this session will walk away with a better understanding of how torch design influences function.
