Bench Tips & Tricks: CAD Edition

Saturday and Sunday

3:15 pm - 4:15 pm | 10:00 am - 11:00 am

When most models were hand-fabricated or carved, jewelers developed instincts about structure, access, and finish long before metal ever touched the bench. Today, with CAD producing the majority of models, those same decisions still matter, but they must be made before casting. This session focuses on the small, often overlooked choices in CAD and preparation that can save hours of bench time and prevent costly metal loss later.

Kelly Williams will share a fast-paced collection of practical tips, tool modifications, and problem-solving techniques drawn directly from real shop experience. The session looks at how to design models so they are easier to finish, adjust, and refine after casting, and why trying to fix design issues in metal is almost always slower and more expensive than addressing them upstream.

Attendees will be introduced to unexpected but highly effective tools sourced from hardware and sporting goods stores, along with simple adaptations that help push designs further while reducing frustration at the bench. Kelly will also share practical advice on materials and process efficiency, including ways to stretch expensive resins and reduce waste without compromising results.

This is a rapid fire session built for bench jewelers who like to leave with ideas they can use immediately. Expect can't-kee-up note-taking, plenty of “why didn’t I think of that” moments, and a steady stream of techniques that make CAD-produced models more workable, more intentional, and more satisfying to bring to completion.
